The BUDDHA’S SEVEN WEEKS AT BODH GAYA provided a pivotal transition between his pre-Enlightenment phase and his long career as a wandering teacher. This special 49-day period is recognized by both Theravada and Mahayana traditions but with innumerable variations. The theme is found as early as Sanchi but is relatively rare in Indian art. However, by the second millennium it enjoyed great popularity in Burma, Thailand and Sri Lanka. This illustrated presentation explores the origins of the theme in India and its transformation in Southeast Asia.
Dr. Donald M Stadtner was for many years an Associate Professor of Art History at the University of Texas, after completing his Ph.D. in Indian art at the University of California, Berkeley, in 1976. He has edited a Marg volume (The Art of Burma: New Studies, 1999), and more recently has published Ancient Pagan: A Buddhist Plain of Merit and Sacred Sites of Burma.
