Each year, NCPA invites a renowned dance institute from India to showcase their work in a series of performances, lec-dems and seminars.
- Aug 23: GURUDA KATCHARI by Darshana Jhaveri & PUNEMJABA-the Obeisance by Bimbavati Devi.
Noted Indian dance historian, scholar and critic, Dr. Sunil Kothari will start the evening with a pre-performance session. Remembering Singh on his 96th birthday, Darshana Jhaveri will dedicate her performance by performing his creative compositions. These compositions will reveal the technicalities, complexities and subtleties of classical Manipuri dance, reflecting Singh’s unique creative abilities. It will be followed by his daughter Bimbavati Devi’s presentation representing the next generation’s work through her own choreography.
At: Experimental Theatre, 6pm
- Aug 24: DEMYSTIFYING MANIPURI with Darshana Jhaveri
The lecture-demonstration will be complemented by videos of Singh recorded by the NCPA and clippings of Raas Leela and Sankirtan. Darshana Jhaveri will demonstrate Singh’s beliefs, teachings, compositions and the individuality of his style as also sources of his inspiration. It will be followed by a workshop in which the basic form of Manipuri dance in lasya and tandava dance movements with basic Manipuri talas, hand gestures and their uses will be taught to the participants.
