Hindustani Flute Concert
Date: 03/24/2007 --- Location: Blackstone River Theatre, 549 Broad Street, Cumberland, RI --- Time: 7.00 pm
UNITED STATES OF AMERICA , 1-February-2007  14:36:15 PM
Hindustani Flute Concert - Rupak Kulkarni

Tabla - Aditya Kalyanpur

The biggest difference between Indian and Western Classical Music is that the former is base largely on improvisation, with emphasis on the creativity of the performer rather then on the exact reproduction of a composer’s work. Rupak is a torchbearer of the Maihar Gharana (School of Music). Living legend Sitar maestro Pt. Ravi Shankar comes from the same school. Rupak is a disciple of the world-renowned bamboo flute Maestro Pundit Hari Prasad Chaurasia. “I think flute is the easiest instrument to reach out to people. When I perform abroad, I don’t have a problem connecting with the audience. In fact they know the Western flute and when they see me play the Bansuri (bamboo flute), they know what other sounds can be derived from it. We introduce more staccato beats to keep them interested, of course, improvising only within the raga being played.” Says Rupak. www.rupakkulkarni.com

Aditya is a disciple of the distinguished Punjab Gharana Tabla Maestros Ustad Alla Rakha and Ustad Zakir Hussain who performed with Sitar Maestro Ravi Shankar for over two decades. Aditya opened the inaugural concert of the Rolling Stones, in India, with a Tabla solo. He has accompanied eminent musicians like Pt. Shiv Kumar Sharma, Pt. Hari Prasad Chaurasia, Dr. Mrs N. Rajam, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, and Ustad Shahid Pervez among others. www.akproductions.org
