Indian Carnatic classical music, arguably the most ancient and traditional form of music from the 2nd century AD and after, will be taught in its authentic form by Shobana Raghavan, master singer from Chennai. Students will be introduced to the ragas (melodic scales) and talas (rhythmic cycles) that make Carnatic music enjoyable and accessible. Students will learn the basic swaras (solfege) that form ragas, gamakas (swara ornamentations) and sollkattus (clusters of beats) that form talas and will go on to learn two traditional songs that use the above aspects.
Musicians are encouraged to bring their instruments if any, to try the Indian melodies taught.
