Described as a poetic dancer and a dancer's dancer, Lakshmi is an exponent of the Tanjavur tradition of classical Bharatanatyam. Special to her technique are graceful movements, intricate footwork and evocative Abhinaya. The ultimate flowering of Lakshmi the artist was guided by Kanjivaram Ellappa. For Lakshmi, imbibing the traditional technique was only a step towards refining a new perspective to make it her own. Deeply committed to the music of her style, she is a trained vocalist who knows to visualize her movements in perfect harmony with the textual and melodic aspects of dance.
