About the artists

GEORGE RUCKERT

George Ruckert is a senior disciple of the legendary sarod master, Ali Akbar

Khan. He has studied and played the classical music of North India for

more than forty years, both in India and at the Ali Akbar College of Music in California. He has performed to great acclaim in India, Europe, Canada, and throughout the United States. In addition, he has

composed scores for dance and film, and accompanied many of India's greatest vocalists in concert and recording. He has written four books on the music of the Baba Allauddin gharana, and holds a PhD degree in ethnomusicology from the University of California at Berkeley. He presently is a Senior Lecturer at MIT. He is a founder and Artistic

Director of MITHAS-MIT's Heritage of the Arts of Southasia.

GRETCHEN HAYDEN

Gretchen Hayden, founder and Artistic Director of Chhandika, is a disciple of

the renowned and innovative Kathak danc master,Chitresh Das, with whom she began her Kathak training in 1972. A principal soloist and teacher at the Chhandam School of Kathak Dance, Gretchen appeared in solo recitals and performed extensively with the Chitresh Das Dance

Company in the United States, Europe, and India. She has initiated accredited Kathak Dance courses at Tufts University and Wellesley College. Through her work as a dancer and teacher, she has contributed significantly to fostering the art of Kathak in the West.
