Mughal-E-Azam is based on the love that happened between Prince Saleem, the son of Akbar, the most famous Mughal emperor to rule India, and a courtesan ‘Anarkali”. The legend goes that the King does not approve of the relationship and separates the young lovers, and has Anarkali buried alive in a wall. The musical had performers from 3 years old to 60 years old, a total of 50 performers, who have been practicing for the past three months for this day. For many of the kids it was the first time on the stage. The musical took a journey through the salient sequences of dialogues and songs from the film “Mughal-E-Azam” interspersed with trivia from the movie being displayed on a projection screen. All the dances were choreographed by Kusum Sharma, and the practice and dedication of the students was evident in the way the programme was presented. Kusum Sharma is trained both in Kathak and Bharatnatyam forms of dance. For the musical, Kathak was the obvious choice as was in the movie. The music of the film was also based on the music that was popular in the Mughal courts at that time, Qawwali and Hindustani music (excerpts from India-Herald)
