NCPA MUDRA FESTIVAL
April 24 - 28, 2013 Mumbai
 INDIA , 23-April-2013  8:47:14 AM
This year, the annual NCPA MUDRA FESTIVAL celebrates the grand heritage of Indian Bhakti poetry - a verse of impassioned longing for the sacred. Five leading dancers have been invited to interpret timeless poems of the Indian subcontinent - embodying the human hunger for the divine - in their own distinctive ways. Adopting a multidisciplinary approach, the festival also incorporates discussions, poetry readings and film screenings, and brings together an assortment of dancers, poets, filmmakers and theatre actors in an exciting five-day cultural carnival.

April 24

- Dance Theatre Godrej, 4pm: SCRIBBLES ON AKKA - Film Screening

A film on the life and work of the 12th century Kannada saint-poet, Mahadevi Akka. Her radical poems, written with the female body as a metaphor, have been composed and picturised in contemporary musical language. A celebration of rebellion, femininity and legacy down nine hundred years.

- Sunken Garden, 5.30pm: THE WHOLE TRANSACTION IS A FRAUD - Talk and Poetry Reading. Poet Prabodh Parikh will introduce the work of the Marathi saint poets, with specific reference to the well-known translations of Tukaram by Dilip Chitre. This will be followed by readings of English translations of the poetry of Tukaram by Mumbai theatre actors, directed by Anahita Uberoi.

- Experimental Theatre, 7pm: MAD AND DIVINE - Bharatanatyam recital by Rama Vaidyanathan based on the poetry of two celebrated medieval women mystics: Kashmiri poet Lal Ded and Marathi saint poet Janabai.

April 25

- Dance Theatre Godrej, 4pm: BISHAR BLUES - Film on Baul music by Amitabh Chakraborty

Exploring a syncretic tradition of Islam, this film focuses on the fakirs of Bengal. In their practice of an indigenous and open-ended form of Islam called 'Marfat' (rooted in the notion that to know oneself is to know the divine), the fakirs have extended the scope of the faith immeasurably. 'Marfat' is passed on in the oral tradition through songs.
