WHEN THE PLEATS DANCE is a unique exhibition which trace the history of Bharatanatyam dance costumes over four decades and is based on the private collection of costumes and jewellery of Geeta Chandran. It has been curated by designer Sandhya Raman. Each decade marks an era in which the dancer explores costume possibilities that distinctly inform dance. From the traditional pavadai (long skirt) she experiments with the cycle-cut to the pyjama-style and saree style dance costumes. It also unveils the process of dance-costume designing; drawings and sketches; fabric samples and colour stories, etc. The creative use of traditional fabrics in the costumes in various design styles are further embellished with numerous drapes, making for a remarkable design and visual journey. The process of dance-costume designing emerges as choreography discussions yield to drawings and sketches. Fabric samples and colour stories are etched out and finally the pleats pressed into shape…
