Synopsis: Karthik (Vijay) is an out-of-job software engineer. He meets Divya (Viba) after he enrolls as a driving instructor. They get married and on a trip to Divya's native place, her past catches up with her.
Movie Review: Mathil Mel Poonai starts off with the story of five school friends. The boys are a notorious lot, and give their teachers hell and fellow students a run for their money. From this, it cuts to the story of Karthik and Divya, and these portions pan out like a cliche. What starts off as a tutor-student relationship gradually becomes mutual admiration and then love. Again, the movie cuts to the story of the boys.
This non-linear narration works well and when the stories meet at the halfway mark, the movie turns to a cat-and-mouse game. All credit to the editors Praveen K L and N B Srikanth, though some portions could have been pruned more.
Mathil Mel Poonai works like a cat on the wall. The script has the potential to be converted into a genuine thriller, but fumbles due to bad writing. The movie is not for the faint-hearted as there is a lot of violence, some extremely graphic. Although this is something that is unavoidable, it could have been toned down, particularly the scenes involving children
