Cast: Sivaji Ganesan, Savithri, Gemini Ganesan, MN Rajam, Thangavelu, MN Nambiar
Direction: A Bhimsingh
Genre: Drama
Duration: 2 hours 40 minutes
Synopsis: Rajashekar dotes on his sister Radha, but her marriage to his good friend Anandhan threatens to separate the siblings for ever.
Review: Bhimsingh's 1961 classic is often referred to as Tamil cinema's most melodramatic tearjerker and while such tags might be superficially fitting, Pasa Malar is actually not a feel-bad movie. Yes, it is melancholic but it also restores your faith in human relationships, not just the brother-sister bond which is the crux of this tale, and its unflinching pursuit of pathos only feels audacious now. The film, actually, isn't full of sadness. Yes, it begins with two little children being orphaned but the next one hour — scenes establishing Raju's love for his sister, Anandhan's courting of Radha and Thangavelu's comedy track — will not seem out of place in a breezy rom-com of that time.
Our first sense of the imminent tragedy kicks in when Raju clashes with Anandhan over his romance, and interestingly, it is the latter who is in the right. Raju's actions until he accepts his sister's love do not endear us to him but once both he and Anandhan — along with Radha — become victims of a wicked plot by Anandhan's aunt, we can't help but feel pity for these characters. The performances too are significant, adding depth to Aroor Das's lines.
