“Actually, we would all rather prefer mango lassi – for the reasons of taste,” said Lychee Lassi’s bassist Beat Halberschmidt, with an air of German practicality when asked how his Berlin-based electronica/hip hop/jazz quartet got its name. When the group was still in the process being formed in the late 1990s, the members happened to visit an Indian restaurant, saw the drink on the menu, liked the sound of it and decided to adopt it as their own. “It fits,” said Halberschmidt in a telephone interview. “It’s a kind of refreshing cocktail.”
As performers, Lychee Lassi fall somewhere in between the Beastie Boys and the Blue Man Group. They blend live instruments,
sampled sounds, turntablism and visuals and garnish it with a healthy dash of humour. Musically, they embrace a variety of genres and stay away from attaching themselves to a trademark sound. “We might generate our stuff in a certain range of sound and styles,” said Halberschmidt. “If you try to point out influences, you might say it’s on one hand hip hop, on the other hand it’s electronic because we use sound effects. You also have some rock and jazz influences. It’s all played with the philosophy of being jazz musicians and improvising and having solo spots.”
The band’s dynamic sound is the result of the member’s diverse influences and backgrounds. Halberschmidt, who used to play in rock and funk bands, composes music for theatre, film and contemporary dance productions.
