While India and South Africa toiled under a Chennai sun on day one of the first Test, the attention was instead focused elsewhere.
Former BCCI top boss Jagmohan Dalmiya took the stand in Mumbai and was charged with fraud in a case that's acquired strong political overtones.
On Wednesday Dalmiya was charged by a Mumbai court of illegally using nearly Rs 3 crore of BCCI money for his personal expenses - To pay for phone bills and hotel expenses and car rentals.
Money that he was supposed to be used only to fight Income Tax cases post the 1996 world Cup that was jointly hosted by India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
Dalmiya's secretary K M Chaudhary and a businessman Gautam Dutta were also arrested and let off on bail.
''The EOW chargesheet claims are false. It's a political vendetta. All records submitted by the EOW were already before the BCCI. The claims are false. Bill reimbursements are not new,'' said Satish Maneshinde, Jagmohan Dalmiya's Lawyer.
Dalmiya supporters say he's being targeted by the current BCCI boss Sharad Pawar, who's key lieutenant BCCI Secretary Niranjan Shah is the complainant in this case.
It's a legal war that has put Dalmiya firmly on the backfoot, an unusual ironic position for a man who was once hailed for resurrecting the Board's finances and turning it into a global superpower.
