BJP launches agitation against pric
The BJP is keeping up the pressure on the United Progressive Alliance government over an out-of-control inflation rate
 INDIA , 7-April-2008  10:57:43 AM
The BJP is keeping up the pressure on the United Progressive Alliance government over an out-of-control inflation rate.

From today, the party will hold a week-long protest against the government's failure to check rising prices. Under what the party calls Mehngai Virodhi Andolan, there will be rallies at all of party's district and state headquarters.

The BJP has also launched a kheti bachao kisan adalat, under which it will collect feedback on loan waivers and power problems of farmers at the district and tehsil levels.

There is more pressure on the government on the issue of inflation, with its Left allies deciding to come together with members of the United National Progressive Alliance or third front for a week long protest starting on April 16.

Two days after the CPM congress concluded in Coimbatore, which ended with a call for a non-Congress, non-BJP alliance, the process seems to have begun.

''The inflation rate is at seven per cent. This figure, in fact, conceals the real burden on common people, which is far more,'' said Sitaram Yechury, member, CPM Politburo.

The parties will demand strengthening the public distribution system, banning futures trading in 25 agricultural commodities and slashing duties on petrol.

But a third alternative is easier said then done. The UNPA has already lost constituents as AIADMK leader Jayalalitha has walked out and former Haryana chief minister OP Chautala is reportedly keeping his options open.

''The Left and the UNPA will launch a countrywide agitation against price rise,'' said Amar Singh, General Secretary, Samajwadi Party.

But the Samajwadi party trying to mend fences with the Congress could turn out to be a sticking point with the Left
