Former IPS officer and tough cop Kiran Bedi has decided to boycott the Olympic torch relay in New Delhi. She is the second person to do this after Indian football captain Baichung Bhutia.
Where Bhutia decided to boycott due to sympathy for the Tibetan cause, Bedi, a former sportsperson, has said that all the security around the torch is just suffocating. She said she felt caged and it goes against the spirit of the Olympic Games.
In what is increasingly becoming a tortured torch relay in Delhi in India, former IPS Officer Kiran Bedi has suddenly pulled out of the Delhi leg, saying the security was suffocating her.
''When I saw the newspapers on Wednesday reporting on the Rajpath being caged I myself felt caged. I don't want to run in a caged environment because for me the torch stands for total exhilaration,'' said Kiran Bedi, former IPS Officer
''For me it stands for uniting people, not driving people away. So it was a clear decision for me that enough is enough. I cannot run,'' she added.
On Tuesday, San Francisco saw anti-China protests even before the torch landed there. Police expect huge demonstrations when the torch begins its journey later on Wednesday.
The future of the relay itself is not clear. There are conflicting statements coming from International Olympic Committee officials. While the IOC Chief said a final decision is expected on Friday, others have totally denied the relay will be scrapped.
''No, no, no we would not scrap the torch relay. We will keep up the torch relay. We mustn't step back,'' said Kevan Gosper, vice president, IOC.
The relay has become a PR disaster for Beijing and now, even the White House has not ruled out that President Bush may miss the opening ceremony
