Nine eminent Indian-Americans, including two women, were bestowed with 2008 Outstanding 50 Asian Americans in Business Award at a glittering ceremony in Manhattan on Wednesday night.
However, Chinese businesses topped the list by bagging the maximum number of awards (18) from an Asian-American ethnic community - just double of that of Indians reflecting the dominance of Chinese-Americans in this sector.
Indian-Americans, no doubt, were a distant second with nine awards, but above rest of the Asian countries. The Pinnacle Award was given to Michael Chen, president and CEO of Media, Communications and Entertainment of GE Commercial Finance.
Among prominent Indian American recipient of the award given for their excellence in the field of business are Neeta Bhasin, president and CEO of ASB Communications; Sunil Garg, executive director of New Jersey's Union County Utilities Authority; Ambuj Goyal, general manager, IBM; Sarbari Gupta, president and founder of Electrosoft Services Inc; and Sameer Mittal, president and chief financial officer of UK West Inc, a manufacturer of solid waste components.
Dr Shan Nair, who co-founded Nair & Company with Vyoma Nair in 1994; R Ravishankar vice-president of I-flex solutions; Kamalpreet S. Virdi, executive president of the Aequor Technologies Inc; and Ajay Waghray, chief information officer of Verizon Wireless were among other Indian Americans to receive the award.
Bhasin, who is considered to be one of the pioneers in multicultural communications specially targeted to the South Asian community in the United States, told NDTV.Com after receiving the award that this was a special for her and her community as it reflected and recognized emergence of Indian-American women as successful businesswomen.
''That is more important for the community,'' said Bhasin, who also hosts a live show on ITV, a New York / New Jersey channel dedicated to the South Asian Diaspora.
