CM orders probe into Naina Devi
CM orders probe into Naina Devi stampede
 INDIA , 4-August-2008  8:19:24 AM
Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister P K Dhumal has announced that Ashwani Kapoor, the Divisional Commissioner of Mandi, would conduct the probe into the Naina Devi temple stampede that claimed 145 lives.

He said that the probe would investigate if the tragedy was caused by rumours of landslides. He rejected the demand of Opposition Congress for a judicial inquiry.

Kumar has also been asked to suggest measures to prevent a similar incident in future, the Chief Minister said.

The Himachal Pradesh government has said that it would consider the 'Vaishno Devi' model to regulate crowds at the Naina Devi temple.

The pilgrims, however, continued to visit the Naina Devi temple even a day after the stampede.

Though pilgrims continued to visit the temple a day after the stampede, Naina Devi temple officials said the number of pilgrims was somewhat reduced apparently because of the stampede and also rain.

In Shimla, Himachal Chief Minister P K Dhumal said his government would examine the possibility of introducing in the state's major shrines the 'Vaishno Devi' model under which the worshippers are allowed to proceed in batches only after their registration.

A majority of those who died belonged to Punjab while the other victims were from Himachal Pradesh and Haryana.

In an exercise aimed at preventing another tragedy, Himachal authorities deployed personnel of ITBP and police besides home guards at Naina Devi to control the movement of faithfuls to the shrine, which is located about 160 km from Shimla and is about 22 km from Anandpur Sahib in Punjab.
