US-Russia N-deal may be re-evaluate
US-Russia nuke deal could be re-evaluated: US
UNITED STATES OF AMERICA , 26-August-2008  0:17:8 AM
US on Tuesday said that its civilian nuclear agreement with Russia, that has already been submitted to the Congress, might be re-evaluated following confrontation between the two countries over the developments in Georgia.

"On the 123 agreement (with Russia), that's something that obviously we're going to have to evaluate, given the current situation. I don't have any announcements for you on that one way or the other," John Rood, Acting Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security said.

Rood made the remarks during a briefing on the Missile Defence deal between the US and Poland, when asked to comment on the impact of Rusia's military action in the Caucacus region on the 123 deal with the country.

He, however, refused to divulge any further details on the issue.

"... I'm not seeking to make any announcements with respect to the 123 agreement right now at this briefing. I think it's something we're looking at, but at this point I'm not making any calls on anyone to do anything in particular," Rood said.

Russia's military action against Georgia -- a key US ally -- and its support to the latter's breakaway regions South Ossetia and Abkhazia has led to a confrontation between the former cold-war rivals.

Earlier the Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and the Deputy White House Press Secretary Tony Fratto sent an unambiguous message that the Bush administration is currently focused only on the US-India civilian nuclear deal, whose fate now rests with the Nuclear Suppliers Group with the second round of talks scheduled for September four and five.

"Our principle focus right now has been on the India civil nuclear deal, having worked through the IAEA, now working through the NSG, and still trying to get into a position to make the appropriate presidential determinations in early September," Rice told reporters on her way to Tel Aviv.
