Singur solution falling apart a day
Bickering puts question mark over Singur solution
 INDIA , 8-September-2008  10:22:34 AM
It seems to be back to square one in Singur, a day after Mamta Banerjee claimed that land from the Tata site would be returned back to the farmers.

Tata Motors on Monday strongly refuted the claim, saying their plans to suspend work at the Singur plant stands and the Bengal government's clarification late on Monday evening has only made one thing clear, it's either back to the table or the agitation site in Singur.

In a strongly worded statement, Tata said: "Tata Motors is distressed at the limited clarity on the outcome of the discussions between the State Government and the representatives of the agitators in Singur. Tata Motors is obliged to continue the suspension of construction and commissioning at the Nano plant."

What triggered this response is lack of clarity on the fineprint of the agreement and Mamata Banerjee's statement claiming that 300 acres from the Tata project site will be returned to farmers.

Mamata Banerjee, Trinamool Congress president, said: "It's a victory, maximum land falls within the project site.

And, this really is the heart of the matter.

Trinamool wants 300 acres to be returned to farmers who refused compensation, while Tata motors says it needs all 997 acres for the Nano factory.

But it was not to be. Just hours after the Tata statement that they were unhappy, the West Bengal government clarified

State Commerce and Industry Minister Nirupam Sen says, "There is no question of relocating the vendor's park to another location. This issue has never been discussed in any of the meetings with Mamata Banerjee and we wish to reiterate this fact."

So, what's going to happen now? Will Mamata retstart her agitation? Or can Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi and the West Bengal still work out a solution that will please all.

But what's clear is that Singur is not likely to go down in history as the birthplace of the world's cheapest car.
