| A stampede caused by rushing devotees crushed almost 147 people to death and injured over a 100 in the famous Chamunda Devi temple in Jodhpur's Mehrangarh fort on Tuesday morning. (Watch)
A lot of devotees had gathered in the temple as it was the first day of Navaratri festival.
The number could further rise as some of the critically injured succumb to their injuries.
This incident is a virtual repeat of the Naina Devi temple stampede in Himachal Pradesh in August, in which 162 people were killed, at least 147 devotees, mostly men, died when they were trampled upon by other pilgrims as doors of the temple opened for worship.
There was a scramble on the narrow 2-km path for gaining entry to the hillock shrine in the Mehrangarh Fort run by the family of erstwhile ruler Gaj Singh.
The casualties were mostly men as the stampede occurred in the queue meant for them while the queue for women and children was largely unaffected.
By a rough estimate, about 20,000 devotees had gathered for the occasion when the tragedy struck around 5.30 am.
