Seeking 'justice for Soumya' ,,,
Seeking 'justice for Soumya' on Internet
 INDIA , 2-October-2008  1:41:56 AM
We have seen how social networking websites have become a platform for expressing opinion on a variety of subjects. Sometimes, it just brings people together who feel strongly for a cause.

The tragic murder of journalist Soumya Vishwanathan while on her way home from work in Delhi is no exception. Now, communities on social networking site are trying to galvanise the public, force authorities to find her killer and keeping the story alive till some breakthrough occurs.

The case has captured the public imagination and now social networking sites like Facebook have become hosts to communities screaming for justice.

A community that had less than 80 members when we first logged on, in just minutes, the number had surged to well over a hundred.

There are plenty of posts and members from all over the world are writing in, but a single voice rings out - the cry is for not letting the story die and not letting Soumya's killers get away with murder.

The online petitions have become the new face of community activity on the Internet and allow members to join irrespective of their physical location, and they are spurring people on to action.

Another Facebook group, Rest in Peace Soumya, is a tribute to the person she was, displaying heart rending message from many of her friends, saying goodbye many years before they should have needed to.

It is not just Facebook, other sites like Orkut too have similar discussion forums with even strangers saying a prayer or leaving a message.

Soumya's tragic story is not the first. Running a search with the word justice throws up over one thousand results on Orkut, a sure sign that the power of the Internet is being put to good use and a reminder to the powers that be, and to those that have departed, that we remember.
