Tata Motors, Gujarat govt sign Nano
Nano drives into Gujarat as Modi offers big incentives
 INDIA , 8-October-2008  0:20:7 AM
From Red-ruled West Bengal, Ratan Tata has taken his Nano factory to BJP-ruled Gujarat.

That's because Narendra Modi's government has laid out the red carpet to Tata Motors, offering it land in Sanand at an attractive price; but more crucially, guarantees for a smooth ride for the Nano.

"We have arrived, and Nano is great," said Tata Sons chairman Ratan Tata on Tuesday in Ahemadabad after his company signed an agreement with the Gujarat government in presence of Chief Minister Narendra Modi. (Watch)

"Agreement is as good or slightly better than what we had initially, so many issues that are intangible that are beneficial to the company," said Tata. (Watch)

As things stands today:

1100 acres of land in Sanand have been allocated to Tata for the project

This land belongs to the Gujarat govt

Tata's 60 vendors will also move to the new project site

It is now confirmed that the car will be provisionally rolled out from Pune & Pantnagar

Though the launch is now delayed by at least three months and will happen in the last quarter of the year

The Chief Minister, however, clarifies: "This is not a lease, Tata is buying the land, at market price."

While Tata is creating a new mother plant for the project, it will also continue to look for land in another state to create a satellite plant -- which will be replicated yet again in another part of the country.

Sources say that discussions are still on with the governments of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka for such a unit. Tata will also seek smaller partners to assemble and distribute the Nano in some areas.

"We will create a series of satellite enterprises who will become our dealers too...," said Ratan Tata on Tuesday.
