| A week ago, Alaska Governor Sarah Palin had accused Barack Obama of being pals with terrorists, referring to his association with Bill Ayers -- a former anti-war radical from the 1960s.
As Barrack Obama consolidates his lead in the polls, the McCain campaign has made Ayres their principle line of attack.
For a nation that is still trying to come to terms with the events of September 11, 2001, the argument that Obama once consorted with a former terrorist unleashed visceral emotions.
"Obama is a terrorist. He is a Muslim terrorist," said one of those present at a Republican rally.
But the strategy may have gone a step too far, forcing Senator McCain to step in.
"I want to be the President of the United States. Obviously I do not want Senator Obama to be President but I have to tell you that he is a decent person and a person you do not have to fear as President," he said.
But for his efforts at civility, McCain was booed.
Despite promising to run positive campaigns, with the race nearing an end, both the McCain and Obama camps have upped the ante on negative attacks.
While this is a predictable move while playing for high stakes, the danger is that it could keep disgusted voters at home on election day.
