| The Democratic presidential hopeful, Barack Obama, and his vice-presidential running mate Joe Biden have said that India is a natural strategic partner for the US and if elected in the November 4 elections, they would further strengthen the US-India relationship.
Obama and Biden's views and policies on India appear in his "Blueprint for the Change We Need for Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI)". The 29-page document is being widely distributed among Asian-Americans and Pacific-Islanders including Indian- Americans in a last ditch effort to woo the community for him.
In the introductory note to the document, Obama tries to generate a personal rapport with the Indian American community by referring to the fact that during his college days he shared his room with Indians and Pakistanis and talks about his personal connection with the rest of Asia.
"I was born in Hawaii, a majority Asian American state, where I spent much of my childhood, and I've lived in Indonesia. I had college roommates who were Indian and Pakistani. For most of my adult life, I've lived in Chicago, a city with its own vibrant Asian-American communities. My sister is half-Indonesian, and she is married to a Chinese-Canadian. I have often said that I consider myself to be an honorary AAPI member," he said.
Elaborating on his plan to strengthen the relationship with India if elected as the US President, the Blueprint says: "Obama and Biden believe in strengthening US relations with India because, as the world's largest democracy and a growing economic power, India is a natural strategic partner of the US."
Making specific mention of the Indo-US civilian nuclear deal, Obama said: "The India civilian nuclear accord is one new component of an enhanced relationship. That partnership should also extend to cooperation on alternative energy and commercial engagement."
