Chandrayaan director gets hero's ..
Chandrayaan director gets hero's welcome
 INDIA , 17-November-2008  1:28:0 AM
It was an emotional homecoming for one of the heroes of India's maiden moon mission. As Annadurai, the project director of Chandrayaan I, stepped into his native village in Tamil Nadu, the people went into a tizzy.

"He's my superstar," exulted a young boy.

People lined up outside every house to welcome home their hero, who grew up in a remote village in Tamil Nadu and went all the way up to head the Chandrayaan 1 mission.

And this is how Annadurai reacted to the rapturous welcome: "I just did not expect such a welcome. Most fresh in memory of this place is when streetlight came to this village when I was studying 3rd. I was running around like anything. My dresses were all full of dust. I got good beating when I got back home."

His father Mylsamy too got nostalgic: "When other students cried to go to school, he used to be happy studying."

Annadurai childhood friends still live in the village and are proud of the early years they spent together.

Malaisamy recalled: "We used to walk all the way to a nearby village 10 km away to see MGR. Those days were just great."

For the hundreds of children of the village Annadurai is a role model. "I will become an IAS officer one day and make our village and school proud like him," said Selvi.

For the man of the moment, it was an overwhelming and emotional visit to his village after many years. A fitting celebration of the contribution of a man who made India proud.
