Hillary to be new US Secretary
Hillary to be new US Secretary of State?
UNITED STATES OF AMERICA , 22-November-2008  1:1:45 AM
It was possibly the worst kept secret in Washington. After weeks of speculation, the American press is reporting that Hillary Clinton has accepted the post of Secretary of State in the Obama administration. A formal announcement is expected only after the American holiday of Thanksgiving, which is next week.

Clinton, who has represented New York in the US Senate for eight years, will have to give up her seat to become Secretary of State. That would make her only the third woman in US history to hold that post, after Condoleezza Rice and Madeline Albright.

But as we have seen, Hillary was Barack Obama's biggest critic and strongest rival in the Democratic presidential primaries.

Obama and Clinton butted heads over foreign policy in the marathon fight for the presidential nomination. Clinton called the now president-elect and perhaps her boss, to be "naive" and unprepared for that 3 am call during a crisis.

On foreign policy, Obama promised withdrawal from Iraq, direct talks with Iran and a tough policy on Pakistan. Hillary opposed him on all three.

And now, it appears that she will be the international representative of the man she one belittled as having no experience.

"It's unusual for this to happen. It does take a certain ego strength on the part of the president, and by the way, I think that speaks well of the president-elect who does that," said Stephen Hess, senior fellow emeritus, governance studies, Brookings Institution.

If it works, Obama's offering Hillary Clinton the most powerful and high-profile post in his cabinet will go down as one of those rare statesmanlike, political masterstrokes.

In one move, Obama can keep the New York senator from challenging him in the senate, especially on issues like health care. He can also disarm a potential rival for the nomination in 2012, if he fares badly in his first term as US president.
