| Republican rising star and Louisiana's Indian-American Governor Bobby Jindal accused President Barack Obama of pursuing "irresponsible" economic policies but promised to work with the new administration in putting the US economy back on track.
Giving the Republican Party's official response to Obama's maiden State of the Union address, Jindal, much discussed as a possible 2012 White House contender, said "all of us want our economy to recover and our nation to prosper.
"So where we agree, Republicans must be the President's strongest partners. Where we disagree, Republicans have a responsibility to be candid and offer better ideas for a path forward," he said in a televised address from his home state.
The Louisiana Governor said the strength of America is not found in its government. "It is found in the compassionate hearts and enterprising spirit of our citizens," he said.
To solve the current problems, Jindal said Washington must lead. "But the way to lead is not to raise taxes and put more money and power in hands of Washington politicians. The way to lead is by empowering you - the American people. Because we believe that Americans can do anything," he said as he went on to criticise Obama's stimulus plan.
