India a significant actor on international stage: US
UNITED STATES OF AMERICA , 2-July-2009  3:5:12 AM

The Obama Administration believes that India is an important and significant actor on the international stage and it would like New Delhi to play a greater role at the regional and global level. "We believe India is an important and significant actor on the international stage," National Security Council spokesman Mike Hammer said. National Security Council is the inter-agency coordination body of the White House. It is headed by General (rtd) James Jones, who was recently in India, Pakistan and Afghanistan.

In the coming months there would be more frequent interaction between Jones and his Indian counterpart M K Narayanan, said Hammer who was also in India along with Jones. Hammer said Jones and Narayanan have been in constant consultations in major issues with each other.

Observing that the Obama Administration is keen in developing a deeper partnership with India, he said the United States believes that India is very important in terms of the work that they can do in terms of challenges on a broad range of issues regional security issues, economic and trade issues as well as dealing with concerns regarding climate change, poverty alleviation, education and health care. "So the visit (of General Jones) was part of the ongoing effort of the Obama Administration to deepen our ties we have - the Secretary (of State Hillary) Clinton's visit India in not too distant future and then of course Prime Minister (Manmohan) Singh is invited to the White House in the Fall," he said
