The US has suspended its millions of dollars non-humanitarian assistance to Niger, after Mamadou Tandja, the president of this West African nation refused to relinquish his post on expiry of his legal mandate.
"In response to President Tandja's refusal to relinquish his mandate, the United States is suspending its non-humanitarian assistance to the Government of Niger," the State Department spokesman, Ian Kelly, said in a statement.
"The Secretary of State (Hillary Clinton) has imposed travel restrictions on certain members of the Government of Niger, as well as other individuals who support policies or actions that undermine Niger's return to constitutional rule."
"We continue to extend our support and friendship to the people of Niger, and look forward to resuming all forms of assistance following Niger's return to constitutional rule," he said.
Tandja's second, five-year term was due to expire Tuesday, but in August he pushed through a new Constitution by referendum, which extended his mandate by three years
