SC reprieve for Arun Gawli in extor
SC reprieve for Arun Gawli in extortion case
 INDIA , 27-August-2010  3:14:29 AM

Gangster-turned-politician Arun Gawli today got a reprieve with the Supreme Court upholding the quashing of MCOCA and other criminal cases registered against him by the Maharashtra government.

A Bench of Justices P Sathasivam and B S Chauhan dismissed the state government's appeal challenging the Bombay High Court's decision to quash the FIR registered against the former MLA in connection with an extortion case.

The apex court said it found no basis to interfere with the decision of the Bombay High Court.

Gawli was arrested in April 2008 and booked under the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) in connection of an extortion case filed against him by a Mumbai builder and also for the murder of the Shiv Sena corporator Kamlakar Jamsandiker.

Gawli, however, will continue inside the Arthur Road jail in Mumbai as his bail plea in the murder case is still pending before the Supreme Court
