New comic superhero - a Muslim boy
New comic superhero - a Muslim boy on a wheelchair
UNITED STATES OF AMERICA , 27-September-2010  3:54:11 AM

For all comic book aficionados, there is a new superhero on the block -- a Muslim boy on a wheelchair who has the power to control metal with his mind.

A comic book featuring 'Silver Scorpion,' the Muslim superhero, is expected to be released in November in Arabic and English by Liquid Comics.

While the superhero's appearance is yet to finalised, an initial sketch by Liquid shows a Muslim boy who lost his legs in a landmine accident.

He later becomes 'Silver Scorpion' after discovering he has the power to control metal with his mind, a report in MSNBC said.

The new superhero was conceptualised by a group of disabled young Americans and Syrians who met in Damascus last month.

The youngsters, brought together by non-profit organisation Open Hands Initiative, had to come up with ideas and story lines for the new superhero.

Initially 50,000 Arabic-language comics will be distributed throughout Syria, followed by issues in the Middle East, Open Hands Initiative founder US philanthropist Jay Snyder said.

The comic will also be available globally in digital formats free of cost through the Open Hands and Liquid Comics websites.

It would be the first in a series of comics with international superheroes, Liquid Comics co-founder and CEO Sharad Devarajan said.

While one of the superheroes in the series will have disabilities, others that will follow will not, Devarajan said.
