Former Army Chief General Deepak Kapoor, who has announced he will give up the Mumbai Adarsh Housing Society flat allotted to him, is no longer in the list of probables for the post of vice-chairman of the National Disaster Management Authority.
Kapoor had written a letter to the then Maharashtra chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh in June 2008 while he was still Army chief seeking membership in the housing society.
Sources said the choice has now been narrowed down to former Home Secretary Madhukar Gupta and former Agriculture Secretary P K Mishra who has also served as Additional Secretary in the NDMA.
The NDMA is headed by the Prime Minister as its Chairman. Gupta is a retired 1971 batch IAS officer of the Uttarakhand cadre while Mishra is a retired 1972 batch IAS officer of the Gujarat cadre.
Sources said that since a former Army chief had applied for the NDMA post, it is the norm to keep his name in the zone of consideration but now he is not being considered.
