A buildup of fluid in the brain of US Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, who was gravely wounded after being shot in the head during the Tucson shooting spree two weeks ago, will likely keep her in the intensive care unit of a hospital here for some more time, delaying the start of her full-fledged rehabilitation.
40-year-old Giffords, a Democrat who is a member of the House of Representatives, was shifted from an Arizona hospital to a leading facility here that specialises in brain injuries.
The fluid buildup in her brain will likely keep her in the ICU until at least the end of this week that would delay the start of the rehabilitation, one of her doctors said on Saturday.
Doctors would have to decide whether a catheter draining the fluid can be removed and Giffords can be transferred to The Institute of Rehabilitation and Research (TIRR), or if a permanent shunt needs to be inserted.
