The headstone is like no other in St. Raymond's Cemetery in the Bronx, both for what it is missing - a name - and what is there instead. A toll-free number.
"The identity of this little girl is still unknown," the words on the stone read, an attempt to lend a measure of respect to language more often seen on fliers stuck to light poles after a crime. "If you have any information please call 1-800-577-TIPS."
The headstone looks more like a place where a little girl would wake up in the morning. There to greet her: a stuffed Elmo doll, a unicorn figure, a Strawberry Shortcake illustration. A statue of a child kneeling in prayer, the kind that hangs on countless bedroom walls.
To the police, it was much more than a headstone. For 22 years, it was an active stop for detectives on the trail of the killer. A site of possible clues, of evidence left behind. Of, say, a "We Miss You" card that just might yield a suspect's fingerprint.
The headstone is marked "Baby Hope." Her date of birth was also a mystery when her body was found 22 years ago, so there is just the date of discovery: July 23, 1991.
"We weren't going to call her Jane Doe," said Jerry Giorgio, the lead detective on the case of a dead girl found bound and smothered, and dumped in a plastic cooler in Manhattan. Giorgio, now 79 and retired, visited the grave Tuesday. The night before, he received a call from the chief of detectives with the good news that she had been identified, though the police have yet to release her name to the public.
He and other detectives collected the money for the headstone and buried her years after she was found. "We are her family," Giorgio said that day. "We are burying our baby."
