PM Modi Meets Top Ministers As Trade Unions Prep For Strike On Friday
 INDIA , 29-August-2016  8:27:31 AM
The central government is working overtime to avert the nationwide strike called by trade unions on September 2, especially after unions said no to the government's request to call off their proposed general strike which is expected to paralyse the banking sector.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is meeting Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and Labour Minister Bandaru Dattatreya today to discuss the 12-point charter submitted by trade unions.

Last Saturday, the Central Trade Unions or CTUs had refused to reconsider their decision to go on strike rejecting the proposal from the labour minister's plea for more time. The central trade unions had said that "the government has failed to address their 12-point charter of demands."

CITU general secretary Tapan Sen told NDTV, "The strike will not be called off. And the Congress-backed INTUC is of the same view. We cannot accept government's request for reconsideration of call of protest strike."

The All India Trade Unions Congress or AITUC and Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), in a reply to the labour minister's letter, said, "The status report on the demands is almost the same as that was circulated exactly one year ago in the joint meeting with the CITUs held on August 26-27, on the eve of the general strike in 2015."

The government which has been trying to build a pro-poor image while pursuing active reform is caught in a bind. The unions are attacking the government for failing to come up with concrete measures have been spelt on statutorily fixing the minimum wage as per norms and social security.
