Heavy snow in the Kashmir valley has brought life to an almost total halt in the state capital Srinagar, which is covered in at least one foot of snow.
Temperatures have dipped to 11 degrees below normal in the valley and there has been no electricity in Srinagar since Monday.
All schools have been closed, and all flights have been cancelled as the airport runway is covered with snow
The Srinagar-Jammu highway has also been closed after landslides along the route near the Banihal pass.
Pilgrims stranded
Jammu has been receiving non stop rain since Sunday. Thousands of pilgrims going to Vaishno Devi are stranded at Katra.
The upper reaches of Jammu and Kashmir received snowfall and the Vaishno Devi Yatra in fact has been cancelled after the killer cold left five pilgrims dead.
Himachal Pradesh didn't fare much better with the hills remaining under cloud cover for most of the day.
However, the blanket of snow in Keylong, Kangra, Kufri and Rohtang Pass was a delight for tourists.
Incessant rain across the north has been caused by two extra tropical systems in quick succession. Both are now moving in an eastward direction.
Though Delhi may see some dry weather ahead it does look like the cold spell will continue in eastern India for a while
