Jones backs England for World Cup
Injured fast bowler Simon Jones believes his England team-mates can win the World Cup, although he won't be watching them do it.
 TRINIDAD & TOBAGO , 16-March-2007  6:20:24 AM
Jones, out for the best part of a year with ankle and knee problems, admits he is a terrible armchair supporter.

He told BBC Sport: "Seeing your mates playing cricket and enjoying themselves is hard work.

"I hardly saw any of the Ashes. When you're sat at home at 3.00am watching cricket it plays with your mind."

Instead, Jones will be relying on updates from his team-mates in the Caribbean, via phone calls and texts.

He said: "I saw Matthew Hoggard and a few of the lads when they got back to Australia and I'm always in touch with Kevin Pietersen, who's a very good friend of mine.

"I met up with him when he came home injured, but I couldn't hug him too hard because of his broken rib!

"KP seems very happy with his game at the moment and he's really chuffed to be back in time for the World Cup. I'm sure the rest of the boys are too because he'd have been missed a hell of a lot."

Jones believes the return of Pietersen and captain Michael Vaughan could be the difference between success and failure for England in the West Indies.

He said: "It'll make a big difference having Michael out in the middle again. The guys that stepped in did a good job in his absence but Vaughany's got that presence both on and off the field.

Jones, speaking at the launch of Puma's new range of Mongolian BBQ footwear, won't be going out to watch the World Cup and will instead be concentrating his efforts on getting himself fit for the forthcoming Test series with the West Indies in May.

"The knee is coming on really well," he said. "It's less than a month to go now to the start of the county season and I'm really looking forward to it.

"It's been a long 11 months and I'm itching to get back to playing competitive cricket.

"If all goes well I should be available for the series against the West Indies, if selected, but for now I'm concentrating all my efforts on Glamorgan."
