Agni-III test fired successfully
Agni-III test fired successfully
 INDIA , 12-April-2007  10:15:16 AM
India took a major step forward in its quest to acquire a credible nuclear deterrent against potential adversaries like China when it successfully test fired the Agni-III intermediate range ballistic missile from the Wheeler Island off the Orissa coast.

The Ministry of Defence has now officially confirmed that all parameters of the 15-minute flight of the missile have been successfully validated. This is a major success for the country's defence scientists after the failure of a similar test launch in July last year.

The 16-metre missile weighing 48 tonnes, was launched from a Rail Mobile launcher system at 10:52 am (IST). The Agni-III has a range of over 3,000 kilometres and is capable of carrying both conventional and nuclear warheads.

The flight was tracked from the interim test range at Balasore in Orissa to Port Blair by two Indian Navy ships in the Indian Ocean.

According to M Natarajan, Scientific Adviser to the Defence Minister, the DRDO is proud of the high degree of indigenous content in the development of Agni-III missile.

The trajectory of Agni-III missile is computed by the onboard computer system based on both launch and target coordinates.

Defence Minister A K Antony has congratulated the scientists for the successful launch saying with this India's strategic capability for minimum credible deterrence has been achieved.

Minister of State for Defence M M Pallam Raju and senior defence ministry officials and officers of the armed forces were present at the launch
