Quota row: IIMs delay admissions
Thousands of students were hoping to know whether they'd made the cut at the IIMs will now have to wait just a little longer
 INDIA , 20-April-2007  10:14:38 AM
Thousands of students were hoping to know whether they'd made the cut at the IIMs will now have to wait just a little longer.

A week ago the united IIMs stood up to the government and said they were going ahead with the admission process.

But on Friday, the unanimity among IIMs was nowhere to be seen.

As per reports, all the six IIM directors were supposed to meet in Delhi on Friday to take a final decision on admissions.

But soon after the HRD Ministry shot off a letter on Thursday evening saying that admissions had to be held back till the OBC quota issue was resolved, the IIMs were a divided lot.

Sources told NDTV that IIM-Lucknow, which was to chair Friday's meeting, pulled out at the last minute and the meeting was called off.

Soon after, IIM-Ahmedabad and Bangalore issued fresh statements toeing the government line, saying that they would hold back admissions till the quota issue was resolved.

The latest directive from the Centre said any unilateral decision taken by the IIMs would be deemed as violation of the code of conduct.

But the ministry says it's not a showdown.

''Our idea is not to go for confrontations. Nothing is achieved by that,'' said Arjun Singh, HRD Minister.

Sources have told NDTV that the IIMs are likely to meet after the Supreme Court's hearing on the OBC quota issue on Monday.

The government says that it's hopeful of a favourable verdict.

''This requires a constitutional amendment, how can we do it by ordinance? The government would try to do whatever possible to implement the OBC reservation. Now there is a new situation. What court decides, let us see,'' said Arjun Singh, HRD Minister.

So what happens to the thousands of students anxiously waiting for their results?

As the quota confusion continues, it seems the academic sessions that were to begin in July could be delayed.
