US President George W Bush will visit in June the two former Soviet satellite countries that will form the heart of a US missile defense system that has elicited strong denunciation from Russia.
The visits in the Czech Republic and Poland will come one before and one after the June 6-8 summit meeting of the Group of Eight industrial countries at a German Baltic resort, Heiligendamm. Russian President Vladimir Putin probably will be there.
A White House announcement of Bush's itinerary issued on Tuesday did not mention the contentious plans for a multibillion-dollar missile shield, planned to have 10 missiles based in Poland and extensive radar installations in the Czech Republic.
Russian protests of the project imply that it threatens Russian security.
The Americans insist the shield is to guard against missiles fired by Iran or another state in the Middle East or farther afield.
Bush will be in Europe from June 5-11. He will stop in Prague on June 5, the Czech capital, en route to the G-8 summit to meet with President Vaclav Klaus and Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek.
He also will speak on democracy and security at an international conference in Prague.
After the summit, at a historic hotel in what used to be East Germany, Bush will fly directly to Jurata, Poland, on the Helski Peninsula jutting into Pucka Bay on the Baltic, for his June 8 meeting with Polish President Lech Kaczynski.
He is scheduled to be at the Vatican on June 9 for his first meeting with Pope Benedict XVI and then meetings in Rome with Italian President Giorgio Napolitano and Prime Minister Romano Prodi.
From the Roman capital, Bush flies to Tirana, Albania, to meet June 10 with President Alfred Moisiu and Prime Minister Sali Berisha.
The whirlwind tour ends June 11 with meetings in Sofia, Bulgaria, with President Georgi Parvanov and Prime Minister Sergei Stanishev.
