Indo-US nuke deal likely by May end
The United States has said the nuclear deal with India could be wrapped up by the end of this month
UNITED STATES OF AMERICA , 2-May-2007  10:14:29 AM
The United States has said the nuclear deal with India could be wrapped up by the end of this month.

The White House statement came after Foreign Secretary Shiv Shankar Menon held talks with US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Nicholas Burns on Tuesday.

State Department Spokesman Sean McCormack said the two nations not only made extensive progress during the talks, but also hope to complete the nuclear deal this month.

Washington believes the deal could be finalised during the visit by Burns to Delhi in the second half of May.

Slow progress

On his part, Menon, who was on a two day trip to Washington, said the talks between the countries are progressing - albeit a little slowly.

''Let me put it positively - as far as I am concerned this is doable and I think we have shown over the last 24 hours in our discussions that we both want to do it and we want to do it as quickly as possible,'' Menon said.

Unfortunately, neither side has the luxury of time as US President George W Bush's term in office ends next year.

Crucial meet

Tuesday's talks were the first high level political contact on the nuclear deal since American officials complained last month that they were frustrated with the pace of the negotiations.

The talks have been slowed down by differences over India's right to test weapons and reprocess spent fuel.

Meanwhile, the Indian Foreign Secretary also met with US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

During the talks, Rice reiterated America was confident that India is ready to work in good faith to get an agreement, which would require some creativity and compromise on both sides.
