US shrugs off Castro's comments
''Oh, my goodness,'' White House press secretary Tony Snow said on Wednesday at a news conference when asked about Castro's comments.
UNITED STATES OF AMERICA , 31-May-2007  3:30:9 AM
The White House has expressed indifference about a recent string of editorials signed by Fidel Castro criticising the US and suggesting President George W Bush wants him dead.

''Oh, my goodness,'' White House press secretary Tony Snow said on Wednesday at a news conference when asked about Castro's comments.

Prompted to elaborate on whether the Bush administration is concerned, Snow added ''It's Fidel Castro.'' He said nothing more on the subject.

Eighty-year-old Castro, who has not been seen in public since becoming ill more than 10 months ago, said in an editorial published on Tuesday in the Communist Party daily Granma that Bush was waiting for him to die but could not kill his ideas.

''I'm not the first, nor will I be the last, who Bush has ordered to be deprived of life,'' Castro wrote.

Regular columns

Called 'Reflectons of the Commader in Chief,' the Cuban leader's opinion pieces are becoming an almost-daily staple in Granma.

Castro lambasted Bush for opposing the European Union's goal for an agreement on carbon emissions at next week's Group of Eight summit, and criticised both Britain and the United States for heavy military expenditures.

Castro shocked Cuba on July 31 when he announced that he had undergone emergency intestinal surgery and was stepping aside provisionally for his younger brother Raul, the defence minister, during his recovery.
