Sunita's relatives in India celeb
The moment the whole of India had been waiting for came at 1.19 am (IST) on Saturday
 INDIA , 23-June-2007  2:21:49 AM
The moment the whole of India had been waiting for came at 1.19 am (IST) on Saturday.

Space shuttle Atlantis touched down at the Edwards Air Force Base in California with Indian-born Sunita Williams on board.

Sunita created a record that of the longest ever spaceflight by a woman of 194 days, 18 hours and 58 minutes.

The feat was achieved on the space shuttle's fourth attempt at landing. The earlier attempts including two on Thursday were aborted due to bad weather.

Soon after the shuttle came to a halt NDTV spoke to Sunita's father who was at New Jersey.

''I hope to meet her next week. We spoke to her last Sunday she was in high spirits. She was never nervous, she is a brave little girl,'' said Vijay Pandya, Sunita's father.

Jubilant India

Sunita may be back on earth but back in Ahmedabad her extended family was over the moon. Days of prayers seemed to have paid off.

There was a sense of unbridled joy that she had touched down safely after spending over six months in space.

''It feels great, absolutely great. It feels like I have won. Even better than if I had done it. We are very happy that Sunita has returned safely.''

''It gives me tears of joy. We are very proud of he. She has shown that she can do anything and that women can achieve anything,'' said Sunita's uncle.

Atlantis' successful return marked the end of NASA's 117th space mission and Sunita's first that was good enough to earn her a place in the record books.
