Hillary woos Indian-Americans ....
Senator Hillary Clinton addressed over a thousand Indian-Americans from across the US at a fund-raising dinner in New York
UNITED STATES OF AMERICA , 25-June-2007  10:22:26 AM
Senator Hillary Clinton addressed over a thousand Indian-Americans from across the US at a fund-raising dinner in New York.

A support group, Indian Americans for Hillary 2008, who has vowed to raise $5 million for her bid for the White House, organized the dinner.

Over a thousand Indian-Americans from across the US attended the dinner at a thousand dollars each for a seat to help meet the target set by the group.

The Senator clearly knew the audience and what it wanted to hear. She used the forum, packed with an audience of physicians, bankers, businessmen and women, to emphasise her emotional bond with India.

''I had such a wonderful time on my first trip to India back in 1996. We visited institutions that gave micro credit to women and we could see their lives change. My husband then went as President and he and I have been back there since because we value the relationship and because we have so many friends in this country who are Indian Americans,'' said Clinton.

''It is important in this new era in which we live that the relationship and partnership between India and America strengthen and deepen. India is the largest democracy and America is the oldest democracy in the world,'' she said.

Richest ethnic group

The Clintons, both Hillary and former President Bill Clinton, have worked hard over the years to build close ties with the Indian American community which is today one of the richest ethnic groups in America. Perhaps now their efforts will pay off.

The most important thing that has driven the two million strong Indian-American community out of its anonymity in the US political process is its power of money. It is the wealthiest of all new immigrant groups in America.

The Indian-American average household income is $65,000 annually, and over 60 percent of them have college degrees.
