Rain claims 40 lives in Maharashtra
Pounding rainfall in Maharashtra has claimed 40 lives in the past few days, latest reports on Monday said.

Twenty-two people died in Amaravati district which is hit by heavy flooding.

Thousands of people have been evacuated in 96 villages. At least 2,000 huts were flattened and 5,000 more dwellings were damaged.

Ahcalpur tehsil received a maximum of 303 mm of rainfal and Fuleshwari river is overflowing.

One death has been reported in Chandrapur.

The flood gates of a dam on Irai river was also opened.

In Kolhapur - water is receding after flooding cut off five villages.

Over a thousand people were evacuated and many others fled the bad weather.

There is some improvement in Raigad district where many villages went underwater.

The situation in Konkan region is also improving.

In Sangli, over 200 people were evacuated to safe places where flooding hit homes, submerged villages and knocked out telecommunications lines.

Mumbai normal

The city of Mumbai returned to normal routine on Monday after rain and flooding paralysed transport systems.

Water began draining in the streets and roads and highways were cleared for traffic.

Most trains and flights were operating as per schedule.

But Central Railway cancelled eight trains after flooding on tracks on some routes

The trains cancelled are - Ferozepur Janta Express, 31 Down Kutch Express, Saurashtra Express, Jammu Tawi Express, Intercity Express, 39 Down Ahmedabad Express.
