The Indo-US nuclear deal stalled work in Parliament once again on Wednesday. The battle lines in the nuclear war inside Parliament are clearly drawn.

It's going to be testing times for the nuclear deal in Parliament starting Thursday and the debate on the deal has finally been announced by the government.

External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee has said that the Rajya Sabha will discuss the deal on Thursday while the debate in Lok Sabha will be held next Monday.

However, the NDA insisted on a Joint Parliamentary Committee, which the government has consistently denied.

For the record the Left criticised the NDA for stalling work but as they don't want to be seen on the same side as the government on the nuclear deal they insisted on a debate.

Parliament session

That's because after the disruptions on Wednesday morning, the government was seriously considering cutting short the current Parliament session.

But rumours of that led to strong protests by both the NDA and Left forcing the government to decide to discuss the nuke deal in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday instead of next week.

''We have pre-poned the debate,'' said Priyaranjan Dasmunsi, Minister for Parliamentary Affairs.

''This is a futile exercise because the political mechanism has preceded the debate,'' said L K Advani, Leader of the Opposition.

Parliament seems set for a nuclear debate, what will be of interest will be the government's intervention and how the prime minister defends his masterpiece
