| Indian professionals- doctors, engineers, scientists and academicians- working in the United States of America organised a peace rally in Washington on Tuesday.
They urged the US Congress to make urgent necessary legislative changes to end their frustrating long wait to get the coveted Green Card or legal permanent residency, a step just below citizenship.
Participants of the peace rally in Washington, who distributed free roses to curious onlookers during their 90-minutes march from Washington monument to the Capitol Hill, said they were inspired by Mahatma Gandhi and this is their version of Gandhigiri to press for their demands.
In July this year, they had flooded the US Citizenship and Immigration Services with white roses to successfully get their demands met.
''That was our first experiment with Gandhigiri in the US. Today's rally is in continuation of our Gandhigiri protest,'' Himanshu Bhardwaj, spokesperson of Immigration Voice, the rally organizers, told NDTV.COM.
Long wait
Representing a wide spectrum of professionals and all those who have entered the US with legal documents, the rally among others was addressed by the senior US Congressman, Jim McDermott.
Addressing the gathering, McDermott acknowledged the frustrating long wait among professionals to get the green card and thus he said there is need to change the US immigration system.
Participants of the rally, who had come from various parts of the US - as far as California and Texas -alleged that the present US immigration system was broken and needed to be fixed immediately.
Dr Vikas Gupta, in his speech at the rally explained how the long delay in getting a green card was coming in the way of his research as he was not able to get his own grant.
A doctor from AIIMS with fellowship and residency from Yale University and Mayo Clinic, the USCIS has put him under the extra-ordinary category.
