Burns urges India to act on N-deal
US Under Secretary for Political Affairs Nicholas Burns has said that India should move within the next several months to complete the nuclear deal.
UNITED STATES OF AMERICA , 23-October-2007  10:53:47 AM
US Under Secretary for Political Affairs Nicholas Burns has said that India should move within the next several months to complete the nuclear deal.

Speaking in New York on Tuesday, Burns said that, ''We don't have an unlimited amount of time. The Indian government needs to make a decision, which we hope will be positive, because the deal has enormous benefits for the US if it goes forward. There will be damage if it doesn't.''

Burns added that India needs to resolve internal disputes over the agreement and come to terms on inspections by the IAEA before the 2008 US Presidential campaign.

He also said that an election year is ''never a good time'' for Congress to ratify a major new treaty.

Karat calls on UNPA

Meanwhile, in India, the Left parties are trying to consolidate non-Congress and non-BJP forces in their fight against the Indo-US nuclear deal.

On Tuesday, CPI(M) General Secretary Prakash Karat met Chandrababu Naidu and Samajwadi party leaders Mulayam Singh and Amar Singh.

The UNPA was guarded about the meeting but indicated that its views were similar to that of the Left.

''We have similar philosophy between the two parties. We can never forget what comrade Karat and CPI-M did to prevent article 356 being imposed,'' said Amar Singh, Spokesperson, Samajwadi Party.

Thereafter, the UNPA leaders are currently meeting in Delhi. The UNPA is significant as the Left is seeking to garner a broader opposition against the nuclear deal.

But according to the Left, as of now, possible voting on the deal in the Parliament has not been discussed.

Meanwhile, the Congress tried to play down the latest political development.

''They are supporting us from outside but that does not mean can we stop them from talking to others,'' said Digvijay Singh, Congress Leader.
