| Mumbai's BEST service may be a popular mode of public transport but it is not in the best of health.
The BEST bus drivers will now have to pay their own bail and fight their own case in case of an accident. Faced with huge losses, the management has decided against bailing out their drivers in case of an accident.
''It is a question of someone's life. If the drivers kill someone, we can't be expected to bail them out,'' said Uttam Khobragade, General Manager, BEST.
Financial pressures have pushed the BEST to defer the bonus of 40,000 employees. The management may also ask about 10,000 workers to take voluntary retirement or VRS.
The company is also considering shutting down or changing non-profit routes. But it is a move that has not gone down well with the unions.
''They don't understand the law. They cannot do this,'' said Sharad Rao, President, BEST Mazdoor Sangh.
With both the union and management firm on their stands, Mumbaikars can only hope that this standoff doesn't affect BEST's services.
