| Chief Election Commissioner N Gopalswami is touring Gujarat to supervise arrangements for assembly elections there in December.
Apart from inspecting law and order arrangements in the southern state and meeting representatives of political parties as well as NGOs, the CEC also chose to specify that religious places could not be used for campaigning.
''Our principle is that places of worship should not be used for campaigning,'' said N Gopalswami, Chief Election Commissioner.
Meanwhile, on Tuesday, the Chief Election Commissioner had also asked city police commissioner to expedite investigations into the recent case of setting ablaze of several two-wheelers after conclusion of a public meeting of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi in Surat.
Gopalaswamy gave this instruction to Surat Police Commissioner R M S Brar at a meeting with him and four police heads of districts of Navsari, Valsad, Dangs and Surat on the first-day of his three-day visit to the state to review preparation for assembly polls in south and central Gujarat in December.
